What is IPL?

For those that have dark spots or sun damage clouding your complexion, Skin Center Boston provides intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) using state-of-the-art BroadBand Light™ Therapy (BBL™). An IPL photofacial is a rejuvenating skin treatment for adults with hyperpigmentation issues on their neck and face. While IPL is a noninvasive process, it can be highly effective and create really wonderful outcomes. Dermatologist Dr. Vladyslava Doktor sends intense pulses of light that raise the temperature of the skin cells, igniting a natural healing process and increasing collagen production. As the added nutrients take effect, patients should see a healthier layer of skin with an improved tone and decreased dark spots.

Who Can Get IPL?

An IPL photofacial reaches the deeper layers of the skin to improve complexion problems, like sun spots and brown lesions, with little or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for IPL typically have issues with their skin, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, visible pores, flushing, freckles, sun and age spots, or dilated capillaries. Both men and women in the Boston, Brookline, and Harvard, MA areas may find success with IPL treatment at Skin Center Boston. Dr. Vladyslava Doktor will examine each patient's skin carefully to see if they are a candidate for IPL during an initial consultation in her Boston, MA office.

How Does IPL Work?

A photofacial is done inside our Boston, MA office in about 20 – 30 minutes in one of our treatment rooms. We perform our photofacials using BBL (BroadBand Light). This cutting-edge technology allows us to treat a variety of skin issues and textures. To start the photofacial, our technician will wash and dry the skin to be treated and cover the eyes with goggles. The IPL photofacial is administered using the BBL handheld device that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of light energy. While most patients will feel some discomfort throughout the photofacial, it is generally bearable for the quick treatment length.

What is It Like After Getting IPL?

There is no recovery period needed with an IPL photofacial treatment. Patients will leave our office with a complexion that is a little red and swollen. This will go away naturally in several hours — if needed, it can be concealed with makeup. Skin Center Boston suggests patients use an ointment on the treated skin to decrease irritation and promote healing. If necessary, anti-inflammatory medicine to ease swelling can be taken. After 2 – 5 days, the irregularities under the skin will come to the surface skin layers and then begin to flake off. Patients will notice visible results after the first session; however, the skin will attain the best results after multiple photofacial treatments. Dr. Doktor suggests approximately 3 – 6 treatments performed every four weeks at Skin Center Boston.
