How Does PRP Therapy Work?
Once comfortably seated in one of our secluded treatment rooms, a small amount of blood will be taken from one of our patient's arms. Usually, we take about one vial worth of blood. The blood will be placed in a centrifuge machine, which will spin the blood for about 15 minutes separating the components of blood. We will place the condensed plasma into a sterile syringe and inject it into the predetermined locations on the patient. The PRP process typically only takes approximately five minutes, but that can vary on a patient-to-patient basis. Since we use a patient's own blood, the chances of a bad reaction to the procedure are very unlikely.
What Should Patients Expect After PRP Therapy?
The plasma used in PRP therapy naturally promotes collagen production and elastin to create tauter, more youthful-looking skin in our patients. As it utilizes a patient's own blood, there is no risk of allergic or adverse reactions. Patients should expect their face to be a little red following the procedure as some traces of red blood cells can make it into the plasma injection. However, cold packs can be used on the treatment site to reduce any discomfort or minor swelling. Following their appointment, most patients should be able to go back to work the next day and resume normal activities, like exercise, within a few days. Dr. Doktor recommends follow-up treatments every 4 – 6 weeks.
